7) Supplemental Recruitment Initiatives.  List and briefly describe the Supplemental Recruitment Initiatives undertaken during the period covered by this Report.

 

(a)     Initiative: INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS

 

College Level Internship

The Employment Unit has a long-standing and extensive internship program open to college students. The Promotions Coordinator heads the program.  The stations strive to attract interns from diverse backgrounds and from a   variety of educational institutions located within the community of license and around the United States. That information is regularly disseminated to colleges and universities as well as posted on websites dedicated to gathering internship information. Students also initiate contact with the stations on their own. Students spend a minimum of 150 hours in the program and receive college credit.

 

The Employment Unit  (EU) currently offers the following semester-long programs:

 

WBAP News Department Internship

The Internship is designed for undergraduate and graduate students interested in working with and learning from professionals at the number one News Station in the Southwest. Students who are energetic, fast learners and able to work under pressure have the opportunity to monitor police scanners, interview news makers, assist reporters, research, test their writing and speaking skills. The internship is available in all semesters.  The WBAP Assistant News Director/Assignment Editor manages this program.  The WBAP News department represented the station Employment Unit at the 3rd Annual Internship Fair on October 7th, 2008 for the Mayborn School of Journalism at North Texas.  It was a great opportunity to network with both grad and undergrad students who are looking for internships.  No interns committed to the News Department internship in this reporting period. 

 

 

WBAP/KSCS/KPMZ Sales and Promotions Internship

The program is designed for undergraduate and graduate students interested in exploring a career in broadcasting and / or public relations. The Promotions Department produces, promotes and executes concerts, live broadcasts, movie screenings and other station-related events as well as client-based promotional van-appearances. Interns assist at these events and are also assigned day-to-day office duties to learn how a radio station operates “behind the scenes”.  Interns are encouraged to spend at least one day in the programming department and sales/traffic/continuity departments to learn how they function.  This internship is available in all semesters. The KSCS Promotions Coordinator and the KPMZ Promotions Director manage the program. There were eight interns during this reporting period.

 

 

Internships For High School Level Students

WBAP/KSCS/KPMZ (The EU) participates in the Internship Program administered by the Arlington Independent School District for the city’s high school seniors, which provides them with full-time career experience in the “real world.” During the program, high school seniors explore career goals by spending 2-3 days per week (Monday through Friday) for four to six weeks with the EU.  Interns work on projects and are assigned tasks based on interests and abilities.  There were four participants for this reporting period. The KSCS Sales Assistant manages this internship. 

 

 

 

 

 

 (b)   Initiative:  JOB FAIRS

 

Invitations to Job Fairs are regularly extended to the EU. The EU’s WBAP Promo Director and WBAP Promotion Coordinator attend Job Fairs.  At the events, resumes are collected and short interviews conducted.  If positions are open at the time of the fair, resumes of qualified candidates are referred to the proper hiring manager for action.  Otherwise, resumes are kept on file and reviewed if an opening does occur within 3 months of the event.  Attendees are also informed of the various careers in broadcasting.  Handouts are brought to each event listing each station’s job information and the email and regular mail addresses to submit resumes.  During this reporting period, the station had a presence the following: 

 

·         August 7, 2008 – Jobing.com, career fair – Noon – 5pm - Dallas Convention Center, Dallas - EU participated in a jobing.com fair on 8/7/08. A booth was set up for the recruitment of full-time Account Executives, Promotions part-timers and interns from the attendees of the job fair.   Resumes were collected, and on-site interviews were conducted. 

 

·         October 8, 2008 – Jobing.com, career fair – Noon – 5pm – Will Rogers Memorial Center, Fort Worth - EU participated in a jobing.com fair on 10/08/08. A booth was set up for the recruitment of full-time Account Executives, Promotions part-timers and interns from the attendees of the job fair.   Resumes were collected and on-site interviews were conducted. 

 

(c)     Initiative: PARTICIPATION IN EVENTS OR PROGRAMS SPONSORED BY EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

 

·        School Career Days: The EU’s Management, News Department and On-Air Personalities are available to speak at Career Days.  The EU represented Citadel Broadcasting at an event at Lone Star Park on March 27, 2008 from 6-8pm. It was sponsored by Texas Tech University.  The invitees to this event included the top 10% of high school students in DFW who will be seniors next year (2008-2009).   The purpose of EU’s presence was to answer questions about various degree programs at Tech and futures in broadcasting. The EU National Sales Manger attended.   The student’s parents of the students also attend.

 

(d) Initiative: Scholarship Program

EU matched the CBS School of Broadcasting ad schedule in exchange for a Student Scholarship in our name.  The commercials were targeted to potential students considering a career in broadcasting.
